WHAT IS A

Cheek Reduction?

Fullness in the lower cheeks is hereditary and can’t be changed with diet or exercise. Those round, chubby cheeks that look so adorable in your baby photos are thanks to what is known as buccal fat pads, which we’re all born with. As we grow, that chubby face usually transforms into a more sculpted adult face with cheekbone highlights and a distinct jawline. However, this isn’t the case for everyone and some people retain their baby face into adulthood, due to genetics, and it can make them appear overweight or as if they have “chipmunk” cheeks. Thankfully, cheek reduction, or buccal fat pad removal, is a simple procedure designed to help patients with round, full cheeks achieve a more sculpted, chiseled look. When the fat pads are extracted from the lower cheeks, it improves the contours of the face and enhances the cheek hollows. The results are so natural looking that most people will simply assume you’ve lost weight.

TREATMENT

Considerations

Cheek reduction surgery is usually performed under I.V. sedation, though general anesthesia can be used if necessary. Dr. Jung makes a small incision inside the mouth to extract the buccal fat pad. Since these fat pads are located deep within the face, they can’t be removed with liposuction. Buccal fat pad removal can be done in conjunction with other procedures to further enhance the facial contours, like cheek augmentation and chin augmentation, or with facial liposuction to reduce the subcutaneous fat of the jawline and neck.

PRE + POST

Op Care

Dr. Jung will provide you with pre-surgery care instructions. After surgery, you’ll be directed to consume a liquid diet for the first 24 hours and a soft diet for the first five days because incisions were made within the mouth. These incisions won’t require any post-op care and sutures will dissolve on their own. There will be some swelling that will give you a postoperative appearance for five to ten days after the procedure. After three weeks, any remaining swelling will have resolved and improvement will be noticeable.
